Rental car deposits, holds and the counter
Understand deposits, card holds, insurance choices and the inspection, so collection and return go smoothly.

The rental price you see online is rarely all that happens at the counter. A security deposit or card hold, insurance choices, fuel rules and inspection all matter, and most surprises can be avoided by reading the terms before you travel.
Deposits and card holds
Most rental companies place a hold on a credit card in the main driver’s name. The amount depends on the company, location, vehicle and insurance you choose. A hold reduces your available credit and can take time to release after return.
Some companies do not accept debit or prepaid cards for the deposit, or apply extra conditions. Check the exact rental location’s policy, which can differ from the company’s general page.
Insurance and waivers
Damage waivers and liability cover vary by country. Find out what your own car insurance or credit card may cover, and under what conditions, before you reach the counter. Read the excess or deductible amount and what is excluded, such as tires, glass or the underside.
Buy only what you understand. A cheaper base rate with expensive add-ons is not a bargain.
Inspect at pickup and return
Walk around the car before leaving and photograph every panel, the wheels, windscreen and interior, plus the fuel gauge and odometer. Make sure existing damage is recorded on the agreement. Do the same at return, ideally with an agent present.
Fuel, tolls and borders
Fuel policies differ: full-to-full is usually simplest. Toll roads may be charged through a device with a service fee. Taking the car across a border or on a ferry may require permission. Additional drivers usually must be present and registered.
Documents at the counter
Bring the driving licence for every driver, the payment card used for the deposit and the booking confirmation. Some countries require an International Driving Permit alongside a foreign licence; check the destination’s official guidance and the rental company’s rules. Age rules vary, and younger or older drivers may face restrictions or surcharges.
Read the agreement before signing, and ask the agent to explain any line you do not recognise. If the counter offers an upgrade or extra cover you did not ask for, you can decline. Make sure the total on the agreement matches what you expect.
