A trip with time to enjoy it.
Add the flexible and coast choices without filling every evening.
- 01
Arrive, settle in and meet the river
Check in around Baixa or Chiado, then keep the first outing light: Praça do Comércio and the nearby Tagus waterfront. If arrival is late, save the walk for another day. Eat near your base rather than committing to a timed tour after a flight.
- 02
Alfama, castle views and an optional fado evening
Start with Alfama’s lanes and a viewpoint, taking breaks on the steep cobbled streets. Add São Jorge Castle if you want a longer paid visit, then return through central Lisbon. A prebooked fado performance can finish the day; check whether dinner is included before buying. Leave room between the daytime walk and evening reservation.
- 03
A full day for Sintra and Pena Palace
Take the CP train from Rossio to Sintra, then use local transport for the hilltop palace. Prioritize Pena Palace and its park before returning to Sintra’s historic center for lunch or an early dinner; do not assume there is time for several palaces. The reserved time is palace-interior entry, not the park gate: allow roughly 30 minutes from the park entrance plus your journey uphill. Late arrivals can lose entry without a refund. Choose either independent tickets or a tour with suitable inclusions, not both.
- 04
Belém’s monastery and riverside
Dedicate the morning to the Belém area, with Jerónimos Monastery if open and available on your date. Continue along the river and view Belém Tower from outside; verify current interior access rather than assuming it is open. Choose one museum or a long café break for the afternoon. Move this day around attraction closures, and use indoor time if rain makes the waterfront unappealing.
- 05
Chiado breakfast and departure
Keep the last morning close to your hotel with breakfast and a short Chiado or Baixa stroll. Collect luggage and allow a sensible transfer margin for the airport or onward train. A late departure leaves time for a missed central stop, but do not book a distant excursion or nonrefundable timed attraction before travel.
When this plan fits
This is a flexible sightseeing plan. Match opening calendars, local weather and your group’s walking comfort before fixing the dates.
Months to consider: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee of weather, conditions or lower prices.
Choose your base.
Baixa or Chiado
A short city stay with shops, meals and central routes.
The tradeoff: Check the last uphill stretch and nighttime street noise.
Avenida or Marquês
A rail-connected base with a more straightforward arrival.
The tradeoff: Some historic-neighborhood evenings mean a return journey.
Alfama
Atmosphere and walks among older streets.
The tradeoff: Ask about steps, luggage access and the exact drop-off point.
Getting there
Compare the Metro and a transfer from LIS against the hotel’s actual approach. Historic districts can mean slopes or steps after the vehicle stops.
Book or check first
- Pena interior access before a Sintra day.
- Any current monument slots that apply to your chosen visit.
Price the whole trip
- Compare the final accommodation total for the same dates, guests and room type, including mandatory fees.
- Add airport journeys, local transport and any car parking or fuel. Check baggage costs before choosing the flight.
- Budget meals and only the admissions or experiences you actually want. Check whether your chosen tour already includes a ticket.
- Read cancellation and change conditions separately for each booking. Keep a little uncommitted time for weather or delays.
Small details that make a better trip
Adding Sintra? Make it a full-day substitution. A Pena Palace time slot is for the palace interior, not the park gate: allow around 30 minutes within the grounds plus the journey there. Check the late-arrival rules before paying. Check the official guidance
Leave room for meals, travel between stops and a weather alternative. Confirm opening hours, accessibility, inclusions and cancellation terms for the actual option you choose.
