Lisbon from the airport: getting in and getting around

Choose between metro, bus, taxi or a booked transfer from Lisbon airport, then get around a hilly city without wasting your first afternoon.

Lisbon’s airport sits unusually close to the city, which makes the first hour of the trip easy to get right and also easy to overthink. The useful decision is not which option is objectively best, but which one fits your arrival time, your bags and the street your accommodation is actually on.

Build an arrival checklist
01

Decide before you land

Look up your accommodation on a map and note the nearest metro station and how steep the final walk is. Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods such as Alfama and parts of Bairro Alto and Graça sit on hills with cobbled lanes and stairs, so a short distance on a map can be a hard walk with a large suitcase. If the final stretch is uphill, a car to the door often makes more sense than a cheaper connection that leaves you climbing.

Check the airport operator’s current transport page for what runs at your arrival time. Late-evening arrivals have fewer choices than mid-afternoon ones, and that changes the answer.

Save the accommodation address exactly as written in the booking.
Note the nearest metro stop and whether the last walk involves stairs or steep streets.
Check self check-in or late-arrival instructions before you fly.
02

Metro, bus or car

The metro has a station at the airport on the red line, which connects to the rest of the network with changes. It is a sensible choice with light luggage and a stay near a station. Expect at least one change for most central areas and allow time for that with bags; not every station has a lift at every exit.

Taxis and ride-hailing pick up from marked areas at the terminal. A pre-booked transfer is worth considering when you arrive late, travel as a family, or are staying on a lane that cars cannot easily reach and need someone who knows where to stop. Confirm the meeting point and what happens if your flight is delayed.

Compare the whole party’s cost, not a per-person fare.
Confirm the transfer meeting point and delay policy in writing.
Keep a fallback option if the metro is closed at your arrival time.
03

Getting around once you are settled

Lisbon rewards a rechargeable transport card or contactless options for the metro, buses and the city’s historic trams and funiculars. Check the current fare products on the operator sites rather than relying on an old blog post; products and accepted payment methods change.

The famous tram routes are popular and can be crowded at peak times. Treat them as an experience on a quieter morning instead of your main way to get somewhere on time. For Belém, a train along the river or a bus is usually a calmer journey than a packed tram.

Wear shoes with grip. The polished limestone pavements can be slippery, especially when wet.

Choose one transport card or payment method for the whole stay.
Plan a Belém day separately from the hilltop neighborhoods.
Keep the tram ride as an outing, not a connection.
04

The departure day

Because the airport is close, it is tempting to cut the last morning fine. Allow for luggage, the walk down from a hill neighborhood and security queues, and check your airline’s own check-in deadline. Ask your accommodation whether bags can be left after checkout so the last day stays usable.

Confirm luggage storage after checkout.
Book or plan the airport ride the day before.
Check the departure terminal for your airline.

MAKE THE NEXT DECISION

Choose the arrival that fits your day.

Start with public transport and the final walk. A booked car can be worth comparing for your arrival time, bags or access needs. Confirm the exact route, pickup point and full-party total.
