Bags on arrival and departure days
What to do with bags between checkout and a late flight, or an early arrival and check-in, so you still enjoy the day.

Arriving early in the morning or leaving late at night often leaves you with luggage and no room. With a little planning those hours can become a useful part of the trip rather than a wait in a lobby.
Compare luggage optionsAsk the accommodation first
Many hotels will store bags before check-in and after checkout. Ask in advance. Apartments and smaller guesthouses may not have staff on site. Some places offer early check-in or late checkout on request or for a fee.
Other storage options
Stations and airports in many cities have lockers or staffed luggage services. Third-party storage shops are common in busy cities. Check opening hours, size limits and what happens if you are late.
Keep valuables, medication, documents and chargers with you.
Plan a day that suits bags
Choose activities near the storage point and the route to the airport. Avoid timed tickets far away on the last day. A last meal or a museum near the station works better than a far-off neighborhood.
Forwarding luggage
In some countries, notably Japan, luggage forwarding between hotels or to the airport is common and well organised. Ask the hotel about cut-off times and allow a day.
Early-morning arrivals
After an overnight flight, a shower and a change of clothes matter more than a sight. Some airports and stations have showers or lounges with day access. Pack a fresh layer and toiletries at the top of your cabin bag. Plan a gentle first morning: a walk, a café and an outdoor space near the accommodation.
If you will not sleep until evening, daylight and a short walk help many travellers adjust to the new time zone.
Late-night departures
A late flight means a long final day. Book a late checkout if the price is fair, or plan a final meal and somewhere to sit near the airport route. Check the last practical public transport or arrange a car in advance. Charge phones and keep the boarding pass offline before leaving the hotel Wi-Fi. If you are traveling with children, plan a place for a nap or quiet hour in the afternoon so the evening flight does not start with exhausted travelers.
